“This is not a pipe.”
The Treachery of Images // Rene Magritte, 1928-1929
the treachery of words. this “social media” is not and cannot ever be real life, just another facet. a tool. and not the predominant, defining tool for how we negotiate all future relationships with others. there is still spin, here. there is more polish, definition and premeditation. if this becomes what defines us we will lose our greatest assets, our simple abilities to be near one another in all of our slop and complication and difficulty. and then learn and grow and change each other from it.
this will never be real life, and should not utterly define it.
facebook can never substitute for looking someone else in the face. myspace is meatspace and can be near your space, too. my wordpress is my mouth, my hands. twitter is the sound the robins make in the trees as we stand outside and smoke a cigarette. i yelp when i’m tickled. i pour my del.ic.ious margaritas in a tumblr, stumbleupon on the patio on a sweltering summer night to disqus how life is a flickr.
i am more than my avatar. and by more i mean obnoxious, ill-thought, sometimes dismissive. selfish, ignorant, people-pleasing. i can be hard to read and i can be hard on you. arrogant and lazy. but i try hard to learn and love and push the limits to explore and be better all the time.
(so, do you still want to talk to me?)
